Teporingo

Nombre científico: Romerolagus diazi
Otros nombres: zacatuche –conejo de los zacatonales (náhuatl), conejo de los volcanes, tepoli, teporinco y teopolito.

Solo se encuentra en las faldas de los volcanes Popocatepetl e Iztaccihuatl, también en el Nevado de Toluca y lomas que rodean a la Cuenca de México por el este y sur. Está en peligro de extinción debido a su cercanía con las zonas metropolitanas.

 Es el conejo más pequeño de México y el segundo menor en el mundo, mide 30 cm y pesa 600 gr. en promedio. Sus orejas son cortas y redondeadas, miden apenas 40 mm y su cola es tan diminuta que es dificil de distinguirla. 

 Es herbivoro ya que se alimenta de hojas tiernas de pasto y zacatones, viven en grupos de 2 a 5 en madrigueras. Cuando se sienten en peligro hacen sonidos agudos para alertar a los demás conejos.

It is only found on the slopes of the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes, also in the Nevado de Toluca and hills that surround the Basin of Mexico in the east and south. It is in danger of extinction due to its proximity to metropolitan areas.

It is the smallest rabbit in Mexico and the second smallest in the world, measures 30 cm and weighs 600 gr. on average. Its ears are short and rounded, they measure just 40 mm and its tail is so tiny that it is difficult to distinguish it.

It is herbivorous because it feeds on grassy grass and zacatones, they live in groups of 2 to 5 in burrows. When they feel in danger they make high-pitched sounds to alert other rabbits.
